Prof. Dr. Nasser Mandour, President of Suez Canal University, stated that the Cybermetrics Laboratory announced in January 2024 the first edition of this year’s Webm        etrics classification of international universities.

Pointing out that this release included 11,997 international universities, out of 31,000 universities whose data was examined.

The university president explained that Suez Canal University has achieved remarkable global progress over last year, as it achieved a ranking of 1626 compared to its ranking of 1749 for the year 2023.

Suez Canal University also achieved a ranking of 38th in Africa, out of 2,064 African universities, compared to its ranking of 42nd last year. Suez Canal University ranked 46th among 1,364 Arab universities in the Arab world, and locally it ranked 15th out of 79 Egyptian universities.

While Professor Dr. Mohamed Saad Zaghloul, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, pointed out that the Webmetrics classification of international universities is an initiative by the Cybermetrics Laboratory, the largest public research authority in Spain.

continued: The Web classification or Web measurements is known as the largest academic classification of higher education institutions in the world, as it evaluates the performance of universities in terms of the performance of the universities’ private pages and in terms of the research standards of researchers every six months (January/July).

The Vice President of the University added that the main goal of the web standards classification is to encourage open access to knowledge produced by universities.

For his part, Prof. Dr. Sameh Saad, Director of the University’s International Cooperation Office, said that the classification evaluates three indicators for universities. The first indicator is the impact index, which evaluates the impact of the university’s page content (Web contents Impact), the number of external or sub-networks associated with it, and the number of visitors and beneficiaries from it. This indicator is estimated at 50% of the total grades, and Suez Canal University achieved a ranking of 6287 globally.

Regarding the second indicator – Dr. Elham Ali Al-Khawas, Director of the Classification Unit at the International Cooperation Office, explained that it is transparency (or openness), which evaluates the top researchers and their citations. This indicator collects the number of citations for researchers from Google Scholar, and the inventory includes the university’s top 310 researchers, excluding the highest. 20 For greater credibility, this indicator is estimated at 10% of the total grades, and Suez Canal University has achieved a ranking of 1340 globally.

The third and final indicator is research excellence. The indicator evaluates the highest cited research in 27 specializations in the Scimago database during five years (2018-2022). This indicator is estimated at 40% of the total score, and Suez Canal University achieved a ranking of 1005 globally.
