Prof.Dr. Nasser Mandour, President of Suez Canal University, indicated that the Dutch CWTS Leiden 2024 classification provides an advanced set of bibliometric indicators that provide statistics at the university level on scientific influence, cooperation, open access publishing, and gender diversity in the period between (2019-2022).

The university president explained that the Dutch classifier CWTS Leiden for the year 2024 announced the results of the classification of more than 1,500 major universities around the world.

In addition, Suez Canal University ranked 1101 globally in overall sciences, 31 in Africa and 14 in Egypt in terms of international cooperation and open access publishing. It also ranked 1136 globally, 36 in Africa and 14 in Egypt in terms of gender diversity. In all sciences, Suez Canal University also ranked 1450th globally, 42nd in Africa and 14th in Egypt in terms of scientific influence.

 

Mandour praised the university’s scholars and researchers for the efforts made to make the university appear in this classification and strive to improve the university’s international classification and obtain distinguished positions in many international classifications, stressing that the university continues to provide all support to researchers and provide all the capabilities available to them to achieve further progress. Suez Canal University has been classified in four basic fields: Biomedical and health sciences, Life and earth sciences, Mathematics and computer science, and Physical sciences and engineering.

Pointing out that Suez Canal University has achieved:

Biomedical and health sciences: ranked 770th globally, 19th in Africa and 9th in Egypt in two indicators of international cooperation and open access publishing. It is ranked 878th globally, 24th in Africa, and 11th in Egypt in the Scientific Impact Index.

It ranked 796 globally, 21 in Africa and 9 in Egypt in the gender diversity index, with a rate of 47.5% for the participation of female university researchers.

Earth and life sciences: ranked 735th globally, 27th in Africa and 11th in Egypt in two indicators of international cooperation and open access publishing. It is ranked 1016 globally, 36 in Africa, and 12 in Egypt in the Scientific Impact Index. It ranked 836 globally, 33 in Africa and 11 in Egypt in the gender diversity index, with a rate of 30.5% for the participation of female university researchers.

Physical sciences and engineering: ranked 1184th globally, 35th in Africa and 15th in Egypt in two indicators of international cooperation and open access publishing. It is ranked 1263 globally, 37 in Africa, and 15 in Egypt in the Scientific Impact Index. It ranked 1230 globally, 37 in Africa and 15 in Egypt in the gender diversity index, with a rate of 23.3% for the participation of female university researchers.

Mathematics and Computer Science: ranked 1224th globally, 34th in Africa and 15th in Egypt in two indicators of international cooperation and open access publishing. It ranked 1213 globally, 35 in Africa and 15 in Egypt in the gender diversity index, with a rate of 14% for the participation of female university researchers.

Humanities and Social Sciences: Suez Canal University appeared in a ranking in terms of the gender diversity index, as it was ranked 1144th globally, 26th in Africa and 5th in Egypt, with a rate of 25.2% for the participation of university researchers.

Dr. Sameh Saad, Director of the International Cooperation Office, confirmed that the inclusion of Suez Canal University in this classification is due to the university’s continued efforts and taking the necessary steps towards raising the research and academic level with the aim of achieving a high level of excellence and regional and international leadership for its researchers. The credit for improving the global ranking is also due to the distinguished efforts of the state in providing free publishing through the Knowledge Bank and allowing Egyptian researchers to browse many international publishing houses. The excellence of the university’s researchers and their keenness to publish in reputable international scientific journals, along with the increase in international cooperation with various universities in the world, contribute to the emergence of Suez Canal University in this classification for the first time.

The Leiden classification is based on publications, articles, and reference research found in the Web of Science database from Clarivate, where at least 100 research papers are required to be published in each specialty. The Leiden Classification uses the Expanded Science Citation Index, the Social Sciences Citation Index, and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. The Leiden classification does not take into account book publications, publications in conference proceedings, and publications in non-indexed journals.

Dr. Elham Al-Khawas, Director of the Classification Unit at the International Cooperation Office, added that the results showed an increase in the university’s rates of international cooperation and that the field of earth and life sciences had the highest rate of international cooperation at 84.3%, followed by biomedical and health sciences at 75.7%, then physical sciences and engineering at 74.6%. Published research in each specialty. The results also showed that the field of earth and life sciences and the field of biomedical and health sciences were the most published in the top scientific journals, 1%, 5%, and 10%.
